Astra House Publishing Intern

Astra House is seeking a publishing intern for the summer/fall 2024 season. This position offers an opportunity to learn about book publishing from the submission evaluation process through editorial exercises, publicity campaigns, and marketing strategies for adult literary fiction and nonfiction.

We are looking for an intern who has a passion for books and a desire to learn about the book publishing industry. The candidate will work directly with the editorial, publicity, and marketing staff to support their work, bring new ideas, and gain experience and knowledge of publishing. No previous experience in book publishing is required.

Responsibilities include:

  • Developing social media posts and posting across platforms
  • Assisting in administrative and office tasks
  • Evaluating submissions
  • Editorial projects and exercises including comp title and market research, drafting copy, proofreading, and data entry
  • Help in managing internal systems and rolling out marketing campaigns
  • Researching for media lists
  • Researching and submitting to literary grants, awards, and festivals
  • Sitting in on Astra House editorial, publicity, and marketing meetings

Hours:

  • Part-time, 15–20 hours/week, from May–December
  • Paid $16/hour
  • This is a hybrid position requiring 2–3 days in-office each week. Applicants must live within commuting distance from our Manhattan office.

We are looking for an intern with:

  • Strong copywriting capabilities, a keen eye for detail, and clear communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and manage deadlines
  • Strong interest in learning the ins and outs of book publishing through hands-on experience
  • Comfort with graphic design on Canva
  • Familiarity with Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook, and willingness to learn MailChimp, WordPress, and Hootsuite
